El Mirage Dry Lake, near Los Angeles, is a high-octane playground for those who need speed. Between the dust, heat and gasoline, the battle rages between environmental groups wanting to shut the park and the speed-thrilled humanity who craves this alkaline wasteland.
The lake is also home to the Southern California Timing Association's Land Speed Record trials. This eccentric group chases speed records in nearly every vehicle imaginable. Speeds over 200mph are fought for and conquered.
